BOTULINUM INJECTIONS

WHAT IS IT?

Botulinum is a bacterium that has been produced in a controlled laboratory setting.  This bacterium is present in many natural settings, including soil, lakes, forests and in mammals and fish. Doctors and nurse injectors have been using botulinum for decades to treat fine lines & wrinkles on the face. “Botox” is a brand name of toxin made by the bacterium clostridium botulinum. There are other brands such as Dysport, Nuceiva, Xeomin just to name a few. “Botox” is the term you hear most often because it was the first to the market. Over the year’s botulinum has evolved into one of the most common injections to relax facial muscle movement that causes fine lines and wrinkles.

WHO BENEFITS THE MOST FROM THE SERVICE?

The most common reason nurse injectors use botulinum is to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The more expressions we make, the more likely we are to see deep permanent visible creases to the skin in the forehead, crows feet, bunny lines and frown lines. What Botulinum injections can also help with is Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating underarms) as well as Chronic migraines and grinding of teeth just to name a few.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Botulinum blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. Once the Botulinum toxin is injected, the temporary nerve block allows the muscle to relax leading to diminishing of existing wrinkles. It also helps prevent more wrinkles from occurring in the future. Botulinum is a great tool in smoothing out to fine lines as well as wrinkles. It is common to start botulinum treatments in late 20’s early 30’s for prevention of deep lines and wrinkles.

WHAT TO EXPECT OVERALL?

Botulinum is a temporary muscle relaxant. After being injected, it can take up to 14 days to see the full results. The treatment typically lasts for 3 months and another treatment would be required to maintain the relaxation of the muscle. The effects may last anywhere from 3-12 months depending on several factors.
